What is the cost of breast reduction surgery?

The total cost will be calculated for you individually by the doctor based on your consultation and the extent of the planned procedure.

How is a breast reduction procedure carried out?

Breast reduction surgery is carried out under general anaesthesia and takes approximately 2–3 hours. Incisions are made in predetermined and pre-marked areas; during the procedure, excess sagging skin, excess fatty tissue and part of the mammary gland are removed.

The breasts are reshaped, the areola is repositioned and its size adjusted as necessary, and then all the incisions are sutured using internal absorbable stitches. Among other things, these help to strengthen the scar tissue to ensure proper healing.

Breast reduction and recovery following the procedure

Breast reduction is carried out by making incisions around the areola, continuing downwards from the centre of the areola and forming a small segment beneath the breasts, resembling an anchor, always ensuring that the scars are as inconspicuous as possible.

Drains are inserted into the operated area; over the course of 24–48 hours, these aid in the drainage of blood and tissue fluid, support faster healing and help to eliminate inflammatory processes, amongst other things. The treated area is disinfected and covered with sterile absorbent gauze.

Following breast reduction surgery, the patient is admitted to hospital for 1–2 days as required, wearing an elastic bandage or compression garment around the chest; the drains are then removed and the patient is discharged with the doctor’s instructions for home care, returning for dressing changes as agreed with the doctor.

Post-operative care is important following breast reduction surgery: a two-week period of rest whilst on sick leave, and wearing elastic garments for approximately two months.

Wearing this helps to reduce swelling and also aids in shaping the breasts and promoting better healing. All stitches are absorbable and therefore do not need to be removed.

To minimise scarring, it is advisable to supplement your aftercare with gentle pressure massages and apply high-quality moisturising creams after around 14 days.

Any scars that remain will fade within six months. Excessive physical exertion is also not recommended for two months following the procedure; showering is preferable for personal hygiene.

The final result is long-lasting, but this also depends on the quality and elasticity of the skin, the individual’s ability to heal, and adherence to post-operative care. Provided a stable weight is maintained, it is not necessary to repeat the procedure.

Women aged 35 and over are advised to undergo regular preventive mammograms.

How should you prepare for breast reduction surgery?

Breast reduction is an invasive surgical procedure; only patients in good health are eligible to undergo it.

A pre-operative examination is also required for breast reduction; for older patients, a mammogram or ultrasound (sonography) breast scan is also recommended.

Approximately 2–3 weeks before the procedure, we recommend stopping any medication that may cause increased bleeding (medicines containing acetylsalicylic acid). It is also advisable to limit smoking both before and after the procedure.

Will I still be able to breastfeed after having a breast reduction?

No, in most cases it is no longer possible to breastfeed after this procedure, as the mammary glands are damaged.

It is therefore advisable to schedule this procedure only after all children have been born and breastfeeding has finished. A reduction can be carried out approximately 6 months after breastfeeding has finished.

When is breast reduction surgery appropriate?

Large breasts often cause problems with the spine (in the cervical, thoracic and lumbar regions), including curvature, and consequently frequent headaches; they can sometimes affect breathing and cause swelling in the legs, which has an impact not only on a woman’s physical health but also on her mental well-being.

The area beneath large breasts (the creases under the breasts) is also prone to inflammation, infections or eczema. However, all these problems can only be resolved and quality of life improved once the breasts have been reduced in size.

Problems such as poor posture and physical strain, problems with the cervical and lumbar spine, frequent headaches, breathing difficulties and swelling of the legs, which affect not only a woman’s physical health but also her mental well-being.

At what age can I have a breast reduction?

Breast reduction surgery is carried out on adult female patients (ideally after they have finished breastfeeding). If there is a risk of serious health problems, the procedure may be carried out on younger women and girls.
